Strategies and Methods for Optimisation of Protection against Internal Exposures of Workers from Industrial Natural Sources (SMOPIE).

Authors: NRG, NRPB and CEPN

 Introduction to the SMOPIE Project

Work activities with materials containing natural radionuclides (NORM) can involve significant exposure of workers, due to internal contamination by inhalation. However, there can be considerable differences in work place conditions, radionuclides involved and the physical and chemical matrices in which the radionuclides are incorporated. The SMOPIE project considered occupational internal exposures in various NORM industries in close co-operation with industrial parties. The study aimed to recommend monitoring strategies and methods to optimise radiation protection. The project was started in November 2001 and the final report was issued on June 30 2004.
