HYDROLOGICAL MODELLING

Modelling the dispersion of radionuclides, pollutants, and cooling water in the aquatic environment

3D lake and estuary model: THREETOX

R. Heling. NRG Arnhem, department of Radiation and Environment

THREETOX is...

A 3D model for modelling the behaviour of heavy metals, pesticides, and radionuclides in deep lakes, estuaries, and coastal areas.

THREETOX contains:

  • Module for the hydrodynamics
  • Module for the sediment transport
  • Module for the pollutants behaviour including:
  • Adsorption - Desorption processes
  • Bottom Sediment - Water interactions

THREETOX is able to predict thermal effects

THREETOX has been applied on the marine environment:

  • North Sea
  • Black Sea
  • Arctic Seas
  • Baltic Sea

THREETOX software

THREETOX has an enhanced graphical interface for customisation, data input, operation, and presentation of the results.

THREETOX validation

THREETOX has been validated intensively. For instance Dnieper-Bug estuary (Ukraine), Bodensee (Germany), the Chernobyl Cooling Pond (Ukraine), and the harbours of Rotterdam (The Netherlands)

Other lake models: LATOX for stratified lakes. LAKECO for shallow lakes, including biota model.
