HYDROLOGICAL MODELLING

Modelling the dispersion of radionuclides, pollutants, and cooling water in the aquatic environment

1D river model: RIVTOX

R. Heling. NRG Arnhem, department of Radiation and Environment

RIVTOX is...

A 1D model for modelling the behaviour of heavy metals, pesticides, and radionuclides in river systems for accidental discharges.

Two RIVTOX releases:

  1. RIVTOX – HD for regular modelling the transport of pollutants in river systems (Diffusive Wave Approach)
  2. RIVTOX – HSV for modelling complex river systems. (Full set of Saint Venant Equations).

RIVTOX contains:

  • Module for the hydrodynamics
  • Module for the sediment transport
  • Module for the pollutants behaviour including:
    • Adsorption – Desorption processes
    • Bottom Sediment - Water interactions
RIVTOX is connected to the runoff model RETRACE.

Flood predictions are possible (extreme runoff due to intensive rainfall rates in the catchment).

RIVTOX software

  • RIVTOX has an enhanced graphical interface for customisation and operation
  • Data input via spreadsheet – like approach.
  • The model output is presented in graphics easily controlled by the user

RIVTOX validation

RIVTOX has been tested on several river systems, for instance the River Rhine, the River Vah (Slovakia), and the River Dnieper (Ukraine). Tests on the combination RIVTOX-RETRACE for flood predictions are performed for the River Rhine and the River Ilya (Russia).

An appropriate River model for regular discharges is WATOX.
