HYDROLOGICAL MODELLING

Modelling the dispersion of radionuclides, pollutants, and cooling water in the aquatic environment

Groundwater Modelling: SUSTOX and GROWTOX

R. Heling. NRG Arnhem, department of Radiation and Environment

SUSTOX

1-D, 2-D, or 3-D transient model for water and pollutant transport in and through variably saturated porous media.

For modelling the vertical transport of pollutants from the surface to the groundwater level

GROWTOX

1-D or 2-D transient models to simulate shallow confined/unconfined groundwater flow and pollutant radionuclide transport in the saturated subsurface environment

For modelling the horizontal transport of pollutants in groundwater the models contain:

Pollutant transport:

  • diffusion
  • dispersion
  • advection

Processes:

  • decay
  • sorption between the different phases.

SUSTOX Application

Activity of Sr-90 in dissolved phase of river Pripyat
Figure: Activity of 90Sr in the dissolved phase under the left-bank of the River Pripyat.

GROWTOX Application

streamlines and groundwater contours under riverbanks of river Pripyat
Figure Predicted streamlines and groundwater contour levels for September 1995 under the riverbanks of the River Pripyat

Model validation

SUSTOX and GROWTOX have been applied and validated for the vertical transport of radioactivity under the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and for the vertical and subsequent horizontal distribution in groundwater under the contaminated riverbanks of the River Pripyat (Ukraine).
