HYDROLOGICAL MODELLING

Modelling the dispersion of radionuclides, pollutants, and cooling water in the aquatic environment

Lakes and reservoir models: 2D Model COASTOX

R. Heling. NRG Arnhem, department of Radiation and Environment

COASTOX: A 2D model (depth-averaged) for modelling the behaviour of heavy metals, pesticides, and radionuclides in shallow lakes and reservoirs for accidental discharges.

COASTOX

Can also be applied for:

  • River segments including floodplains
  • Shallow coastal areas.

modelling inundation
Figure: COASTOX: modelling the inundation after bursting of the left-bank dike (top view) and the concentration of the pollutant on the floodplain

COASTOX contains

  • Module for the hydrodynamics
  • Module for the sediment transport
  • Module for the pollutants behaviour including: Adsorption - Desorption processes and Bottom Sediment - Water interactions

interface

COASTOX software

  • COASTOX has an enhanced graphical interface for customisation and operation
  • Data input via spreadsheet - like approach.
  • The model output is presented in 2D graphics.

COASTOX validation

COASTOX has been tested on several reservoirs and lakes: Pripyat River floodplain (Ukraine) Kiev Reservoir, Kralova Reservoir (Slovakia) IJsselmeer (The Netherlands)

Other lake models are: THREETOX, LAKECO
