Life Cycle innovations & Isotopes / Section FI - Irradiation testing
The High Flux Reactor is used for the irradiation of materials (visit section Materials of the group LCI for materials research), isotopes and fuels and targets for transmutations which is explained below. A large range of irradiation facilities is available for different types of irradiation tests (ramp testing, instrumented in-core or poolside facility tests) and different neutronic conditions. The neutonic conditions can be tailored to the requirements of a specific experiment, by hardening or softening the spectrum or by increasing/decreasing the local neutron flux.
Fuel irradiation
Typical examples of fuel irradiation projects performed in the HFR are:
- High power ramp testing of light water reactor fuels
- Base irradiation and ramp testing of MOX fuel with various microstructures
- High temperature reactor fuel testing with on-line measurement of fission product release
- Fast reactor fuel testing
- Material test reactor fuel (U3Si2, UMo) qualification
Transmutation
Typical examples of transmutation projects performed in the HFR are the irradiation of:
- Plutonium containing inert matrix fuels
- Americium containing inert matrix fuels
- Iodine and technetium transmutation targets
- Thorium-based light water reactor fuels
Irradiation consultancy
In addition, irradiation consultancy is offered for the feasibility or design option for irradidation experiments, such as:
- The feasibility of innovative targets for transmutation
- The production of new medical and industrial isotopes
