In the Netherlands, strong media attention is given to the results
of an experimental programme on plutonium transmutation in the
High Flux Reactor (HFR) in Petten. NRG is an important player
in the worldwide attempt to reduce existing plutonium stocks,
which originate from reprocessing and the dismantling of nuclear
warheads.
In co-operation with JAERI (Japan) and PSI (Switzerland),
NRG performed a transmutation experiment containing seven fuel
pins with innovative fuel concepts. The results of the irradiation
of plutonium, embedded in so-called inert matrix fuels, revealed
the feasibility of highly efficient plutonium burning. With this
recently developed technology, the net plutonium consumption
in light water reactors is four times higher than with the traditional
MOX fuel concept. This is achieved by the use of a uranium free
fuel, which have the advantage that no new plutonium is generated
during irradiation. NRG, with its partners, is now focussing
on higher percentages of transmutation as well as on transmutation
of other elements contributing to the lifetime and radiotoxicity
of nuclear waste. A member of the Socialist Party, former Greenpeace
campaign leader, put forward a motion to the government asking
for an increase and extension of this research, which contributes
to a more effective and efficient reduction of the plutonium
stockpiles, both of civil and military origin.
