YOUNG MEMBERS BNCT MEETING 8-11 September 1999, Petten, NL

WELCOME

This meeting will be the first opportunity especially for young researchers and those relatively new to the field of neutron capture in medicine to meet with their peers to discuss their own work and exchange technical ideas. The aims of the meeting are quite different from the main Neutron Capture Therapy (NCT) meeting held every 2 years.

There will be a strong emphasis on practical aspects of research and on technical issues, rather than concentrating on major results. It is hoped that the meeting will also encourage interaction between research groups and increase understanding between the many different areas involved with NCT.
The meeting will be kept at a small scale, limiting the number of participants to approximately 50. The atmosphere will be relatively informal, and will provide an unintimidating atmosphere for exchange of ideas among those involved in the front line of research.

The meeting will be hosted by ECN and NRG in Petten (NL), in co-orperation with the university of Birmingham (UK) and the International Society of Neutron Capture Therapy.

PRESENTATIONS BY PARTICIPANTS

Each participant is expected to give a 15 minute presentation on his/her research area, followed by 5 minutes for discussion. The presentations will explain experimental details and experience, and will be aimed at a general audience of NCT-workers. The purpose of the meeting is to make research areas accessible to research workers from different backgrounds, and so it is essential that the level of the presentations should be appropriate.

We hope that every participant will be able to give a presentation on his/her research work. However, time is obviously limited and it may be necessary to either combine talks on a similar subject or cancel some talks. If there is someone that you may be able to combine your presentation with, please indicate this when registering. An abstract book will be available for 20 Dutch Guilders at the meeting. Please submit your abstract, maximum length 2 pages, before June 1999.

KEY SPEAKERS

Besides these presentations, 5 key speakers, experts in their fields, will give a seminar about their field of expertise. This will broaden the knowledge of the participants in the NCT-related topics of radiotherapy, radiobiology, medical physics, chemistry and nuclear technology.

VISIT TO FIRST CLINICAL BNCT FACILITY IN EUROPE

Petten is the first clinical European BNCT facility, having entered its Phase I trials in October 1997. The meeting will include a visit to the High Flux Reactor BNCT irradiation suite.
Petten is also at the forefront of nuclear medicine technology and participants will have the opportunity to tour Mallinckrodt Medical isotope production facility.

ACCOMODATION & TRANSPORTATION

Accommodation will be in the form of summerhouses in Groet, a village 10km from Petten and close to the beach. Each summerhouse sleeps 5 or 6 people and includes kitchen facilities. The total cost per person of accomodation will be 120 Dutch Guilders. Canteen lunches are available at the conference facilities in Petten and the summer houses have cooking facilities. There are a few shops and cafes in Groet.
Including accomodation, lunches and transportation from Groet to Petten and vice versa the costs will be 160 Guilders per participant.
If some additional sponsorship can be found, this may also cover the cost of accommodation, lunches and transportation.

The accommodation will be available from the Tuesday afternoon. It is possible to arrange to stay longer in the summerhouses after the meeting, at additional costs to the individual participant. The extra cost for 2 or 3 additional nights will be approximately 170 Dutch Guilders for each house. Please indicate if you wish to prolong your stay when you register.

Two Dutch Guilders is little bit more than 1 US Dollar.
